henna

Henna

Deep Red Base
Henna is a natural plant dye that not only colours your hair with a red hue but covers each hair shaft and builds a protective layer that safeguards the strands from damage. Regular use of henna makes your hair thicker and stronger. It helps bring back the lost health of your hair and repairs damaged locks. Henna also helps restore the acid-alkaline balance of the scalp without affecting the natural balance of your hair making it shiny, glossy, voluminous for healthy and gorgeous hair.
2000-x2000-Indigo

Indigo

Natural blue dye
Indigo is a natural blue dye when mixed with henna that gives cool brown hues.  It helps prevent scalp infections and stimulate new hair growth and prevent excessive hair fall.
Amla

Amla

Strengthens hair
Amla, also known as Indian Gooseberry naturally contains tannins, vitamin C, and is astringent. It reduces the red tonnes of henna while adding texture, volume, wave, curls and shine to your hair. A key ingredient to promote growth, increase thickness and strengthen hair strands as well.
ziziphus

Ziziphus

Promotes hair growth
A natural cleanser and conditioner, similar to many plants that grow in arid climates, it produces a plant wax to maintain moisture within its leaves. Ziziphus protects hair from dryness by depositing the naturally occurring wax – a thin moisture-retentive layer which helps hair not to dry out.
Aloe-Vera

Aloe Vera

Moisture protection
Henna colouring can feel drying for some people. Aloe vera adds moisture to the blend. It naturally contains vitamins A, C, and E contributing to cell turnover, promoting healthy cell growth and shiny hair. Vitamin B12 and folic acid are also contained in aloe vera that can keep your hair from falling out.
Tumeric

Tumeric

Anticeptic
Turmeric is a great natural cleanser and invigorates the scalp while remaining gentle on delicate skin. The scalp is the foundation of hair, so keeping it healthy is essential for growth and strength. It can also help reduce hair loss through less breakage and improving the overall health of your hair.

A healthy G6PD deficient adult may safely have small applications of henna. G6PD deficiency is an inherited condition, and any infant who is diagnosed with this condition MUST NOT have henna – Please seek a medical practitioner for queries. More information about G6PD and Henna is available here.
People with severe allergic reactions to latex may also be allergic to zizyphus spina christi.  Always patch test before using!

Will this product work on dark brown/ black hair?

Lightening your hair colour with EARTH COLOURS is not possible. If you use Chestnut on your dark hair, it’ll help make it stronger and healthier only. There will be no colour change other than colouring any grey hair that you may have.

Will this product work on my chemically coloured hair?

EARTHCOLOURS can be used on chemically treated hair BUT in some cases, the effect may only start to appear after 3 – 6 applications. Your hair cuticle can sometimes be really damaged by your previously chemically coloured hair which could produce undesirable colour results. We recommend performing a strand test first to avoid disappointment. You can do this by retrieving hair from your hairbrush and colouring those, or by testing on a small patch of hair behind your ear.

Will Chestnut cover my greys?

Grey hair is unique as they do not contain melanin pigments, hence producing a lighter result than non-grey hair. With a higher percentage of grey hair  – the overall colour result will also be lighter with the first application but will become richer in colour after 3-6 applications.

  • On some rare occasions, grey hair can turn green or blue when applying EARTHCOLOURS that contain a high percentage of Indigo – please perform a strand test first.
  • To avoid a green/blue hair situation – follow a 2 step colouring process.

STEP 1: Colour your greys with Artisan O. henna powder
Mix the henna powder in water and leave it to dye release for 4 hours. Apply this paste to your grey hair. Rinse after 60-90 min – Your grey will be orange now!
STEP 2:  Use EARTHCOLOURS
Mix the herbal hair colour sachet powder with water and apply immediately. Rinse after 2-3 hours for stubborn greys.
Do NOT use any shampoo during this process. Wait for 48 hours before using Shampoo.

How to do a strand test?

You can do a strand test by harvesting hair from your hairbrush. Mix 3-5g of hair colour with water and apply over the collected hairs and see the results after rinsing and drying it out.

How do I store the product?

Once opened, use immediately. Exposure to air will degrade product quality.

If unopened, our EARTHCOLOURS have a shelf life of three years. To preserve the freshness of this product:

  • Avoid exposure to heat. The powder will remain fresh if stored at room temperature or below in an air tight condition.
  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.

While EARTHCOLOURS are 100% pure and organic, we do not recommend using it on the eyebrows, lashes or anywhere near your eyes.

Chestnut did not cover my greys. How do I make it work?

Keep in mind that grey hair is notoriously difficult to cover and you may need to apply 2 to 3 applications to cover the grey hair completely. As the product is completely natural, you can do this on consecutive days without the risk of damaging your hair.A strand test is recommended prior to colouring all your hair. To get a darker or more intensive colour result, it is sometimes necessary to colour your hair twice. However, you should wait at least 12 hours before colouring a second time.

STEP 1: Colour your greys with Artisan O. henna Powder

Mix the henna powder in water and leave it to dye release for 4 hours. Apply this paste to your grey hair. Rinse after 60-90 min – Your grey will be orange now!

STEP 2:  Use EARTHCOLOURS blend

Mix the powder with water and apply immediately. Rinse after 2 – 3 hours.

Do NOT use any shampoo during this process. Wait for 48 hours before using Shampoo.

Why did henna make my hair dry?

Henna can feel dry for some people. Your hair isn’t damaged, and it will return to normal after a few washes with shampoo and conditioner. Sometimes plant particles may still be in your hair, after a few washes, any remaining plant material will slide off your hair naturally. You can also use an aloe vera mask treatment after you colour your hair to increase moisture protection.

Why did I get a headache from henna?

Sometimes you can feel a headache during or after a henna application. This is usually because your neck is feeling an unusual pressure of added weight from the henna on your head. A good neck support will help this process or seek professional medical help immediately.

This product did not colour my roots, what do I do now?

Oils on your roots must be washed and shampooed off thoroughly before colouring otherwise, the henna can’t hold on. People also often have dye resistant roots because their hair is strong and healthy near the root. Older hair is often more weathered and absorbs dye better. Add a pinch of salt to your hair colour mix to ‘rough’ it up a little and reapply to your roots if necessary.

Why are my roots more red than the rest of my hair?

The hair at your roots are strong and healthy. Henna easily binds to hair but also has better bonding properties than indigo. Add a pinch of salt to your hair colour mix to ‘rough up’ indigo in the paste and reapply to your roots if necessary.

I mixed my paste but I’ve got a change in plans and cant colour my hair now. What do I do?

If you accidentally leave your henna sitting out on the counter, you might experience a difference in colour result especially with indigo blends.

How much do I need to use?

Each box has 2 x 50g sachets.

Total amount of powder you should use:
Above ear length: 50g (1 sachet)
Shoulder length: 100g
Mid-back length: 150g
Lower back length: 200g
Hip length: 250 to 300g

You would require a little more than the above estimate if you have thick/coarse hair.

Always patch test before full application. You can simply mix up 3-5g of powder to test the colour a little first.

Instructions

Before you start: Shampoo wash your hair completely clean. Do not use oils or conditioners as you want to start with a clean base for best colour results. Any oil or dirt in your hair will prevent henna from penetrating to your roots. Remember to wear gloves during this process to avoid staining your hands and nails.

Step 1:

Open the sachets as per your hair length requirement and in a bowl, add lukewarm water slowly to the powder. Stir to make a creamy textured paste until you reach a yogurt like consistency and apply within 15 minutes.

1. Keep 10% of your powder aside, in case you have added too much water and need to thicken your paste later. Remember to remove all the clumps before applying to your hair.

2. Apply coconut oil or body butter to your hairline, forehead, ears and neck to avoid staining your skin.

3. Applying your hair colour mix onto slightly damp hair helps the application process a little easier.

4. Add a pinch of salt to your paste if you are looking to cover greys. Salt can help Indigo hold onto your hair better.

Step 2:

Start from the top, applying the paste from root down to the tip. Once completed, cover with a shower cap and relax for 1 – 2 hours or keep it longer (3 – 4 hrs) to achieve deeper colours.

  • Henna loves warmth. If you apply heat to your hair as you dye it, you can get better results. Covering your hair with a woollen cap or shawl will keep your henna warm and moist. Or a bonnet hair dryer will help bring the maximum colour potential as well.

Step 3:

Rinse your hair with plain water and avoid shampoo, oils, conditioner or any hair creams for the next 48 hours. Your hair colour will intensify during this time with exposure to oxygen.

1. Wash your henna off really well or the remaining plant particles in your scalp may feel itchy and gritty leaving your hair appearing dry.

2. A shampoo and conditioner wash after 48 hours will help slide all plant material off your hair completely and lock in moisture.

Covering Greys

Keep in mind that grey hair is notoriously difficult to cover and you may need to apply 2 to 3 applications to cover the grey hair completely. As the product is completely natural, you can do this on consecutive days without the risk of damaging your hair.

  • A strand test is recommended prior to colouring all your hair.

If your strand test did not colour your grey hair,  you will need to follow this 2 step colouring method:

STEP 1: Colour your greys with Artisan O. henna Powder

Mix the henna powder in water and leave it to dye release for 4 hours. Apply this paste to your grey hair. Rinse after 60-90 min – Your grey will be orange now!

STEP 2:  Use EARTHCOLOURS blend

Mix the powder with water and apply immediately. Rinse after 2 – 3 hours.

Do NOT use any shampoo during this process. Wait for 48 hours before using Shampoo.

With regular use of EARTHCOLOURS, you will not require this 2 step colouring method anymore. Your hair will have enough build up of henna and will cover your greys in a single step.
